March 24, 2016 - Lakeshore Storm Assurance - by Deb Sleeman

Dear Parents,

I wanted to reach out to our Lakeshore Storm Softball & Baseball families to share with all of you where we, as an organization, stand on the recent allegations brought about with another travel organization. As I am sure most of you have heard, one of the coaches/board members for Michigan Sabercats Softball was arrested this past Monday for criminal sexual conduct in the first degree with a minor. After hearing about the allegations, I'm sure everyone's focus and concern is on the well-being of the child that has come forward to her mom. We all hope that she will recover from this and pray for a resolution and peace for her and her family. We also send prayers to the coach’s family members as they go through this difficult time with the media and the inevitable changes to their lives that have resulted from the circumstances.

Due to this situation, my husband Matt and I, and many of our coaches, have fielded some legitimate questions from families inside and outside our organization pertaining to the safety of our players. I want to assure all of you that we, Lakeshore Storm, take this situation very seriously and have always put a tremendous amount of thought into who coaches and represents the Lakeshore Storm program. To bring some reassurance to all of you, every year we have each coach (both male and female) sign a Coaching Responsibilities contract that they must agree on in order to coach for our organization. Within that contract, we specifically state that a coach will never be alone or communicate directly with an athlete without the parents’ knowledge/consent (for complete transparency, please see the attached Coaching Responsibilities contract). Along with coaching contract, all coaches must agree to a background check.

As the President of Lakeshore Storm, I take great pride in our coaches, our organization, and our athletes and will do whatever is necessary to keep our athletes safe. Our primary goal is to provide all of our softball and baseball players with the best positive experience that we can.

If you have any questions or concerns whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact me, or one of your coaches.
